Flash Fiction Challenge #14 – Shall I Compare Thee to a Lukewarm Vanilla Latte?

I swear I was not on anything when I wrote this. This story had been building in the back of my mind for a couple of days, but when I sat down to actually write it, it took a shape I hadn’t expected. It’s closer to poetry than prose, I think. I won’t deny that the title (and what it’s clearly inspired by) didn’t affect that.

The technical restriction wasn’t as hard as I expected, although I’ll admit I had to replace a fair few words with synonyms, but the end result is strange anyway, so maybe that was part and parcel. I did use the title in the text, multiple times, but I feel that is a reasonable exception.

I do think this is a fantastic example of what I’m trying to accomplish with this challenge. I don’t think I ever would have written anything like this if not for the restrictions I received for it. There’s something cool in knowing that.

As for the final result, I don’t know. See what you think.

Title: Shall I Compare Thee to a Lukewarm Vanilla Latte?

Premise: The light/heat from the sun is gradually fading and something must be done.

Dialogue: “Do you really need to stick that many pins in your head?”

Technical: Cannot use the letter ‘e’.

Shall I Compare Thee to a Lukewarm Vanilla Latte?

Shall I compare thee to a lukewarm vanilla latte? World upon which I am, in guardian’s caring light, hath which not a burning loss of warmth? Forsooth, dark brings dark, and pain, and night, and last days of living in ubiquitous knowing.

Shall I compare thee to a lukewarm vanilla latte? Hath not you milk within your lust? Hath not you dark within your knowing? Hath not you warmth within your soul? Sustain you not all man?

“Do you really need to stick that many pins in your head?” says a man. If his vision was so knowing, that man might say: “is that not so? Do you want not many for many?”

Many for many and many and on, until dark’s cold shroud. Pins hath not right, pins hath not truth, pins hath not thought. Pins hath solution to guardian’s dying bloom.

Shall I compare thee to a lukewarm vanilla latte? Is not your comparison by hand of guardian known by now? Is that not so?

Is that not so?
