Ghosts of Saltmarsh – Episode 9 “The Road Through Hades”

So this was an… interesting session. To put it this way, between constantly having to make saving throws to keep from falling into despair or apathy, to keep from being poisoned by the pervasive landscape, or to keep from getting killed by giant bird creatures, our trek thus far through Hades has really felt like a slog through a grey hell. Hasn’t all gone swimmingly, either.

We began on the road to Pluton, making our way towards our hopeful destination. We met some weird bird people who seemed shifty but not dangerous, and then left them behind, no doubt to kill and eat us later. But then things started going bad.

First, we had to make a save against the mental effects of the place. Several of us failed, giving us disadvantage on certain things and a degree of either apathy or despair. Then, after taking a long rest, not only was one of our crew taken during the night, but we had to make a Wisdom Save to keep from gaining a level of exhaustion. A couple of our crew failed and gained their second level, which suddenly meant we were moving at half pace and doubled the remaining five days of our six day journey.

To sum things up over the next couple of days, we lost five crew members to either being taken in the night, succumbing to the poisonous nature of the place, or being pecked to death by a giant bird creature (leaving us with just two of our original fourteen). Those birds tried and failed to ambush us on the fifth day, and we killed two before the other two ran off. We also, at this point, have almost everybody that’s still remaining on at least one level of exhaustion, or poisoned, including our player characters. So things aren’t going brilliantly.

Oh, and we’ve picked up Orpheus, too. As in, the Orpheus.

Anyways, the day after the attack, the birds ambushed us again, this time accompanied by a smaller, vulture-like magic duder, and succeeded. After a surprise round where they did a ton of damage, we began the fight proper and…

And disaster struck. Our DM lost his internet, and since we play online due to being on different continents, we had to call the game there. So, to recap, we’re in combat with giant bird creatures, in Hades, being ground down by the environment, we’re all Exhausted, and our crew is dropping like flies. And we still have five days’ travel to get to the next place, where we might find a reprieve, but have no guarantees.

That’s where we’ll be picking up next week. Another short one today, but what can I say, technology, right? Tune in next week to see if we make it out of Hades alive, because honestly, it’s not looking good.
