So the Sci-Fi-London challenge (see here) got me thinking. Well, to be honest, it was last year’s challenge that got me thinking, but if there’s one recurring theme you’ll see in this blog, it’s that I’m a world-class procrastinator. Anyway, it got me thinking that I’d like to set myself a weekly flash fiction challenge as part of this blog.
The rules are simple:
- Each story will need to be written as part of a particular given genre.
- Each story will need to be titled with a particular given title.
- Each story will need to include a particular given line of dialogue.
- The aim is for each story to be around 1000-1500 words.
See? I said it was simple.
The purpose of the exercise is twofold. For sheer fun, otherwise what’s the point? But also to challenge myself as a writer. Eventually, I hope to get the particulars from my readership (if I ever get one) but for now I’m getting them randomly from people I know. So without further ado, let’s get on with the show.
Challenge #1
Title: Ticket Ninja
Genre: Steampunk
Dialogue: “Naturally, I think you should contact him. But please don’t mention our chat, and definitely don’t tell him about the umbrella stand!”
Special thanks to Viral, Graham and Matt for providing the first round of restrictions. Stay tuned for Ticket Ninja later in the week.
