Brightwind – Episode 6 “Back in the Saddle”

Here we are again. Back at it.

We began the session by picking up the story the day after the party’s defeat of Cousin Dirkolai. While planning their next move, they were interrupted by a visitor, an elf called Mortimer Footstool. Morty explained that he was valet to one of the lords of the closest bunker-city, Fallen Star, and that he had been tasked with finding a group of adventurers that could help his lord with a particular task. Despite the details being kept secret, the party accepted, so Morty explained how to get to Fallen Star before teleporting away.

Before leaving, the party – specifically Poppy – sought out a new leader for Castletown. She ended up finding a minotaur by the name of Bob, who was far from suitable. Not that she noticed.

The following morning, Clourc and Duck parted ways with the others to head to Foot, where they were going to update Borfel and the townsfolk there. Brakken, Poppy and Monk, meanwhile, hopped in the car and started on their way due east, toward Fallen Star.

The journey to Fallen Star was largely uneventful. Only three things happened along the road. First, Poppy was finally afflicted by the major symptoms of Blinding Sickness, an ailment that she picked up during the first magical storm the party was caught in. Basically, it made her turn blind. Eventually, upon reaching the bunker-city, the party managed to find a recipe for a cure, but they have yet to finish crafting it.

The second significant event on the way was another magical storm. The party, thanks to clever spell use on Poppy’s part, managed to find a cave to wait it out. Unfortunately, the cave was already home to a tyrannosaurus rex. The party killed the t-rex, largely thanks to Monk’s first ever couple of uses of Stunning Strike, and harvested its parts while they waited for the storm to abate.

The third thing to happen happened on the night before the party arrived at the bunker-city. After meeting a fellow traveller, a half-orc travelling salesman called Mog, the party went to sleep for the night and Brakken had some… bad dreams. Come morning, the party discovered that he had gained a distended maw, a mouthful of fang-like teeth, and a hankering for half-orc, orc, and human flesh. Because, thanks to eating half-orc in Ma-Ma’s pie, he has become cursed. He has become a wendigo. However, thanks to rolling well enough on a saving throw, he did not attempt to eat Mog during the night.

Arriving at the bunker-city, the party acquired the Blinding Sickness cure recipe from Old Larry, a lizardfolk healer, before heading down into the bunker proper. Lowering in on a stone elevator, they found themselves in a massive cavern, filled with buildings carved from the floor and twinkling, floating lights, with an enormous meteorite in a clearing in the middle. The fallen star the city was named after.

From the elevator, the party made their way straight to the compound of Lord Gormer Bendrosian. There, they met with Morty again before finally meeting Lord Bendrosian, who told them that they would need to prove their capabilities by dealing with a monster that had attacked a small village a day to the south before he would consider them for his required task. The party agreed, and Morty led them to an inn to spend the night before they were to set out with him in tow in the morning.

And that’s where we ended the session. More of a roleplay-heavy one this time, and with some big consequences finally coming into play. I, for one, am very curious to see how Brakken deals with his new condition. But we’ll see what happens as it happens. In the meantime, tune in next week to see how the monster hunt goes and just whatever might come next.
