Ghosts of Saltmarsh – Episode 6 “The Tortle and the Hare”

Our session today picked up at the end of a short rest, where Cass and our sea elf buddy managed to recover some, but not all, of their health and abilities. As they were just finishing up, they were hailed by a pair of strangers appearing from the brush. And what an odd pair they were.

The tall one was a large tortle, a Barbarian/Blood Hunter, wearing a pair of longswords and a blue bandanna (and, in case you’re wondering, his rage word is ‘cowabunga’ – yes, he really chose this). The short one, by which short is an understatement (2’6″ anyone?) was an awakened hare, bedecked in leathers and wielding a shortbow. My new Scout Rogue.

The two of us were in the swamp to hunt a large, dragon-like monster that had been terrorising a nearby village or two – the very same crocodile that just ate our last characters. What an amazing coincidence. Because of this, we all agreed to team up to destroy it.

Along the way towards the croc’s lair, we happened to run into those two ogres we had met before. They were hungry again, so Cass convinced them to help us defeat the croc in exchange for all of its body that we didn’t need (read: everything but its head). Bolstered as such into quite the eclectic party, we continued on our way until we reached the croc’s lair.

When we arrived, we spotted the croc out in the middle of its pond. While the rest of us preferred the more subtle approach, the ogres went straight for it. Leonardo joined them as quickly as he could while the rest of us attacked it from afar. The croc managed to kill one of the ogres, but otherwise, it died really easily. Like, really, really easily. Surprisingly easily. I guess it was still injured from our earlier fight, but considering this thing was responsible for the deaths of two of our characters, it went down shockingly quickly.

Anyways, after the fight the ogre took his share and left, and the rest of us made our way back to the lizardfolk lair. Upon returning, we met with the queen again and she told us that we had done enough to warrant an alliance. She introduced us to the two lizardfolk that were to be their ambassadors to Saltmarsh, and we thanked her and took our leave. With the ambassadors accompanying us, we sailed back to the town and brought them in front of the council, who accepted the situation and the need for an impending conflict with the sahuagin.

Knowing that it would be some indeterminate amount of time until that fight came, we decided to take a job picking up some goods from a nearby town in the meantime. We sailed down the coast, but along the way were attacked by a trio of water elementals. The fight took ages because they were resistant to most of the damage we could do, but we got them in the end, with some damage done to the ship but luckily no fatalities among the crew.

After the fight, we reached the town and organised the collection of the supplies. While staying overnight, we sought out any more jobs that might be available, and heard whispers of a couple of possibilities. Intending to pursue them next week, we ended the session there, because the elemental fight really did take forever so we didn’t have much time to embark on something new.

So that was that. A solid introduction to our new characters. Playing a hare certainly is an interesting prospect, and I’m curious to see what comes of it. And, of course, to see how things go, and where we end up. And how long it takes for me to die this time, too. Can’t forget that.
