Weekly Flash Fiction Challenge #9 – The Idea Nexus

I can’t say I’m liking the new premise restriction. I’ll stick it out for the next three weeks, just in case this last week won’t be the standard, but at this point, I doubt it will last longer than that.

Title: The Idea Nexus

Premise: A group of friends on a 9 day cruise notice the crew disappear one by one.

Dialogue: “When I felt the cold pebbles under my feet, I knew where you brought me, but I never thought you’d be this cruel!”

Technical: Can’t start any sentences with a word starting with ‘th’.

So here it is:

The Idea Nexus

On the first day, one of them disappeared.

On the second day, one disappeared.

On the third day, one disappeared.

On the fourth day, one disappeared.

On the fifth day, they finally noticed. But no one would give them any answers.

On the sixth day, they noticed that one of their own had disappeared. “Where’s Michael?” asked Peter, after Michael had been unseen all morning. “Have you seen him?”

“No,” replied their third friend, Jeff. “Do you think they got him?”

“I hope not.”

After spending the rest of the day searching for Michael without success, they discovered that they had no way of contacting the outside world.

On the seventh day, Jeff disappeared. Peter was left searching the ship for them both, and found no trace, despite even leaning on the remaining crew.

On the eighth day, they came for him. He was masked, and cuffed, and they took his shoes. He was taken off the ship. Underfoot the ground was pebbles, and then he knew.

“Peter,” said the familiar voice of Michael, “I’m real sorry about this.”

“Michael,” said Peter, “I just knew it. When I felt the cold pebbles under my feet, I knew where you brought me, but I never thought you’d be this cruel!”

“Sorry, brah. It was a choice between you and me. And they want you more. You always were the ideas guy.”

“Fuck you, asshole.”

“Yeah, you’re probably right.”

And then something plunged into his skull and sucked out his brain.
